Eureka is a port city on the Californian Pacific Coast and the hub of trade, health care, the arts and the government in this region. It is located next to Humboldt Bay and features 500 miles of industrial docking facilities and marinas. The town is surrounded by the Coast Redwoods, boasting some of the world's highest trees, as well as many related parks. Because of the extensive woodlands in the area, Eureka hosts the headquarters for the California State Parks, Six Rivers National Forest and the North Coast Redwoods district and is an important player in the lumber trade. It is therefore not surprising that the hotels Eureka provides are popular with tourists as well as business professionals.

As Eureka is ideally situated within close proximity to many natural resources, the economy was founded on activities such as fishing and timber and gold mining supplies. As gold mining quickly diminished, along with fishing and timber activities, other sectors such as tourism, services and healthcare, became very significant.

Eureka is known as an important historic landmark in California. It has a very charming Old Town, which is one of the USA's best-preserved Victorian era business districts. Old Town offers many specialty shops and interesting shopping areas, so be sure to reserve at least one day to explore this historic part of Eureka.

John Villani recommended Eureka as the top small art town in America in his book about small art towns. The town also features a prestigious event called "Arts Alive!" on the first Saturday of every month, when over 80 local galleries and businesses are open to the public. During "Arts Alive!", visitors can also enjoy live performances of local bands as well as other performance art and local cuisine. Besides "Arts Alive!", the town offers entertainment throughout the year. Several theater groups, such as the Eureka Theater and the North Coast Repertory Theater, have productions all the time. Other annual cultural events include the Redwood Coast Jazz Festival in March, the Kinetic Sculpture Race in May, Redwood Acres Fair and Rodeo in June, Blues by the Bay in September and Christmas Truckers Parade in December. During these festivals, the hotels Eureka offers are in high demand, so be sure to book well in advance.

Those interested in history will find a wealth of interesting information at the town's museums. For more insight into California's far North Coast cultural and regional history, Clark Historical Museum comes highly recommended. Exhibits focus a lot on the nineteenth century's Victorian era and the museum also features a big Native American collection including stoneware, basketry, implements and regalia. The Humboldt Bay Maritime Museum features exhibits focusing on the area's maritime history, including photographs, artifacts, library archives and other materials. Booking an excursion on the museum's historic boat, Madaket, is a definite must-do. For more art exhibitions, head to HSU First Street Gallery, the Morris Graves Museum of Art, or the Ink People Center of Arts. If you want to encounter history outdoors, stroll through Fort Humbolt State Historic Park, where you will find logging equipment as old as 150 years. Children will enjoy a visit to the Discovery Museum for Children, as well as the Sequoia Park Zoo, which is known as California's oldest zoo. The zoo spans seven acres and contains more than 250 animals of 75 different species.
